Gambakwe says a third force has emerged in Zimbabwe that will completely transform the security, political and economic landscape in Zimbabwe.

Going into 2023, Zimbabwe will witness previously unseen events which will attract international attention.

Some of the events that we are going to witness will include assassination attempts and attacks on prominent political figures.

1. What is a third force?

A third force is a military structure that operates in the shadows. It often has political, economic and military objectives.

1. Does a third force now exist in Zimbabwe?

Gambakwe says a third force now exists in Zimbabwe creating a situation that is different from the one in 2008, when violence was controlled by the state security structures under Mugabe.

2. What are the objectives of the third force?

The third force has emerged ahead of the 2023 elections because of the unique nature of those elections.

– ED Mnangagwa is entering his last term as Zimbabwe President. He is constitutionally unable to run for another Presidential term.

– The leader of the biggest opposition party, CCC, Nelson Chamisa, does not have sufficient support to win the Zimbabwe 2023 elections with an outright victory.

– The elections are therefore not desirable to many people in both ZANU-PF and in CCC as a Mnangagwa victory is almost certain. If Chamisa was to win, the result will not be an outright victory.

Therefore, the main objective of the third force is to stop the 2023 elections at all costs.

The desirable outcome will be a new political order in Zimbabwe.

This can only be achieved through the escalation of tension in the country and anarchy in the country.

3. Who is in the third force?

A third force which is made up of players from both the CCC, ZANU-PF, G40 and other activists.

These players have political, economic, and military interests that can not afford the current political stalemate that exists in Zimbabwe.

4. Will the third force succeed?

The three factors needed for a third force to succeed are now present in Zimbabwe.

– A highly polarised environment where society is deeply divided and each side does not tolerate the other.

– A populist leader with a very vocal following, but who is unable to attain power. Chamisa is now increasingly believing that he is the chosen leader of Zimbabwe.

– A prolonged political stalemate in an environment where the economy has been failing.

What needs to be done?

– In the short term, there is a need to immediately Kickstart dialogue in the country.

– There might be a need to postpone the 2023 elections altogether.

– There is need to develop a new political culture based on mutual acceptance of different political groupings.
