Early reports from the accident scene indicate that at least 72 people died in Mutare after a bus collided with a fuel tanker.

However, it has now been established that people from the bus managed to disembark before the bus caught fire.

The accident occurred near the Matongo area which is about 15km from Mutare.

Passing motorists could be seen rescuing accident victims who jumped from the bus after the accident.

The rest of the passangers were burnt beyond recognition in the bus.

Witnesses said the bus driver encroached into the path of the fuel tanker resulting in a head on collision.

The man who saved the 8 people who survived and jumped out of the bus, with no legs, had been named as Sirizani Butau.

Batau was badly burnt by the fire in the process as seen in the picture below.

ED Mnangagwa, the President of Zimbabwe wrote on Facebook:

I am truly shocked and saddened by news of yesterday’s crash near Mutare, which took 4 lives too soon.

May their souls rest in eternal peace.

Zimbabwe Republic Police have issued a statement this afternoon clarifying the numbers.
