Watch live as Gambakwe Media unpacks the narrative by popular Award winning Zimbabwe journalist, journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, who has been telling Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to stay away.
Writing on Facebook, Chin’ono said:
Today I had a painful discussion with a Zimbabwean who has just graduated with a PhD in Paris.
“Should I come back home,” she asked.
I told her to wait, get a job, set herself in France & observe what is happening home from afar.
If I was an oracle, I would have done the same in 2003 when I relocated back home.
The nonsense about home being best when nothing works is sentimental BS.
Chin’ono’s key narratives
Over the past 2 years, Chin’ono has used his platform to spread the following false narratives about the situation in Zimbabwe:
- That nothing good is happening in Zimbabwe;
- That no one can succeed in Zimbabwe.
- That only Chamisa can bring Zimbabwe back to prosperity.
- That government corruption has brought Zimbabwe to its knees.
Chin’ono repeats these four narratives on a daily basis, and is often believed by many Zimbabweans in the Diapora.
However, the truth is the exact opposite. The Zimbabwe of 2021 is not the same Zimbabwe we had in 2017.
The country has undergone remarkable changes under President Mnangagwa and is full of opportunities for those who are open to such opportunities.
In fact a lot of good is happening in Zimbabwe, a lot of young Zimbabweans are succeeding and the future of Zimbabweans is not in the hands of politicians. Government corruption in Zimbabwe is minimal compared to regional countries such as South Africa.
What should the Zimbabwe Diaspora do?
Zimbabweans in the diaspora should do the exact opposite of what Chin’ono is suggesting. Do not wait and see. Instead, every Zimbabwean in the Daspora should be exploring opportunities in Zimbabwe.
Specifically, Zimbabweans in the Diaspora should organize themselves into groups and fund projects, starting small and invest in Zimbabwe.
Diaspora Zimbabweans should be aware that they can only get wealthy is in Zimbabwe. The alternative as I always say is unimageable, dying in a foreign land and coming back to Zimbabwe in a box! I encourage every Zimbabwean to start making their way home and stop being negative about Zimbabwe.
There is a lot of good happening in Zimbabwe.
