Revealed: Bleaching Lotion and Maxi Tone Cosmetic Products Contain Hydroquinone Above Recommended Limits

The COMESA Competition Commission has notified the general public about the possible risks of consuming caro light and Bronz Tone Maxi Tone (275) Cosmetic Products because they contain hydroquinone above recommended limits.

According to World Health Organization, Hydroquinone can cause skin irritation and dermatitis and can induce cancer.

The maximum consumption of Hydroquinone as recommended by WHO is 2%.

Hydroquinone is classified as a toxic substance by the United Nations Committee Experts on the on the Transport of Dangerous goods.

Further, some of the COMESA member states including Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda banned the importation of Cosmetics with hydroquinone.

The commission has established that products with hydroquinone are imported and distributed in the common market, mainly in Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
