Zambia first lady, Mutinta Hichilema, has thanked former first Lady Esther Lungu, after she sent her congratulatory message to Hakainde Hichilema for his stunning victory over her husband, Edgar Lungu.

Esther did not attend the inauguration of Hakainde Hichilema, leading to speculation that she was struggling to accept the stunning victory of the new President.

Her team later clarified that she did not attend because she was struggling with a fractured leg.

In her congratulatory message, Esther said:

Mrs Esther Lungu, former first Lady of the republic of Zambia, wishes to congratulate His Excellency, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, on his election as the 7th Republican President of Zambia together with the second female vice President her honor Mrs Mutale Malumango and the First Lady, Mrs Mutinta Hichilema. To my dear sister Mrs Mutinta Hichilema, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.
