There was an attempted break-in at the Golden Peacock Hotel where Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is staying in Harare.

Chiwenga has been staying at the hotel since his return from China in November 2019. Chiwenga had spent almost a month in the Asian country receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

After the attempted break-in, a fire gutted the hotel last week. The fire left a large section of the hotel’s kitchen reduced to ashes.

A source said a group of unidentified men who were travelling in a red Toyota Wish had attempted to break into some private rooms at the hotel.

According to the information given by the source, the unidentified individuals gained entry into the Golden Peacock Hotel’s premises through the back and attempted to open doors to the administration rooms. Their efforts were thwarted by an alert guard.

After the incident which lasted less than ten minutes, the source said six hotel workers who had sneaked out of the premises to visit their families were taken in for questioning by members of the Criminal Investigations Department in Marlborough.

Ever since Chiwenga checked into the hotel as a guest, Golden Peacock Hotel staff have been barred from leaving the premises or visiting their families.

When contacted for comment, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was unaware of the attempted break-in at Golden Peacock Hotel.
