The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC Alliance) says the suspension of by-elections is unconstitutional.

In a statement released by Ian Makone who is the Secretary for Elections for MDC Alliance, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) ignored section 159 of the constitution which requires vacant elective public offices to be filled within 90 days.

“We are on the firm view that it is grossly unreasonable to ban by-elections when Covid-19 restrictions continue to be eased throughout the country,” said the secretary in a statement.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission lifted the suspension on voter registration today.

On 8 January the commission had announced that it will lift the suspension on voter registration. However the suspension of by-elections remains in place.
