Tanzania’s Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan is set to take over as Tanzania’s new President.
This comes after the passing of John Pombe Magufuli who died due to heart complications.
Samia Saluhu Hassan was Magufuli’s vice president. Her term will run until 2025Samia Saluhu will be East Africa’s first female President.
In a televised address on Thursday, Samia Suluhu Hassan announced that Magufuli had succumbed to heart complications.
Magufuli’s death comes after weeks of speculation of his whereabouts with the suspicion that he had been hospitalised for Covid-19.
The speculation had led to several arrests, as the government sought to contain the rumours.
However, the party also called for the release of all citizens who were arrested for circulating rumours about the president’s health.
