The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the country is moving from level 3 to level 1.
Ramaphosa said the return to Alert level 1 means that most of the restrictions on economic activity have been removed.
However, wearing of masks and social distancing will remain.
The president also extended the period for the Special Covid-19 Grant by a further three months.
He further extended the UIF’s special Covid-19 wage support benefit until 15 March 2021 for sectors of the economy that have not been able to operate over this period.
The announcement of moving to level one comes after the dramatic decline in cases over eight weeks which came due to a combination of the public health measures introduced, changes in behavior and accumulating immunity in those who became infected in the communities.
Ramaphosa also revealed that new infections, admissions to hospital and deaths have failed significantly and continue to decline steadily.
Last week, South africa recorded just under 10, 000 new infections.
