The President of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi travelled to Namibia this week on a working visit and used the opportunity to apologise for the shooting of four fishermen that happened in November.

The four fishermen were shot dead by soldiers of the Botswana Defence Forces, after being mistaken for poachers.

At the time, Namibia indicated that three of its nationals had been shot, while fishing with a Zambian national.

Dr Masisi said the matter is before the Botswana courts who are dealing with the matter. He said a report has been compiled on the incident, but said the report will not be made available to Namibia as the incident happened on Botswana territory.

Masisi denied that Botswana has a shoot to kill policy and said the government is making efforts to ensure that similar incidents don’t happen again.

Namibia President, Dr Hage G. Geingob, said Namibia and Botswana enjoy cordial bilateral relationships and discouraged demonstrations over the matter.

He slammed those trying to use the incident to incite animosity between the two countries.
