President, Cyril Ramaphosa tonight addressed South Africans and provided an update on the Covid-19 situation. The latest address comes only 11 days after his last address on the 3rd of December 2020.

He said South Africa is experiencing a second wave with over 8000 infections recorded on 13 December 2020.

Below are the key points of Ramaphosa’s address :

1. South Africa is getting close to a million Coronavirus Infections.

2. SA had entered a second wave of Coronavirus Infections.

3. If we do not act urgently, the second wave will be more severe that the first wave.

4. The number of new cases has increased to over 6000 a day.

5.Deaths have increased to over 150 deaths a day.

6. Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KZN and Gauteng are leading in infections.

7. Young adults are now the majority of new infections.

8. This is because of parties, overcrowding, no social distancing, alcohol and not wearing masks.

9. The recent post matric rage festival is a reminder of how these large events can be.

10. Over 1000 who attended the event have tested positive for coronavirus.

11. Festivals, Concerts and parties are proving to be sources of illness and death.

12. Increased travel, people don’t observe measures as they travel.

13. The more we travel the greater the risk.

14.  The relatively low rates of infections have made us less careful.

15. We have gotten into the Christmas mood early.

16. The festive season poses the greatest threat.

17. We recognize the sacrifice that churches made by cancelling gatherings.

18. If we do not do things differently, this will be the last Christmas for many South Africa’s.

19.  Sarah Baartman and Garden route districts are declared as hotspots.

20. Further measures to be imposed starting tonight.

21. Drivers must ensure that all passengers must wear a mask.

22. Managers and operators of all buildings must ensure that all who enter must wear a mask.

23. Gatherings including religious gatherings may not exceed 100 and not more than 50 in small venues.

24. A differentiated approach will be applied for beaches.

25. Eastern Cape and Garden route beaches will be closed from the 16th.

26. In the KZN, beaches will be closed on the 16th,25th,1st.

27. Northern Cape beaches will remain open.

28. Members of the coronavirus task force will not go on leave.

29. Curfew will Stat at 11pm to 4am.

30. Restaurants and bars must close at 10pm.

31. The hours of curfew will apply to Christmas eve and Christmas.

32. Sale of Alcohol from retail outlets will be allowed only from 10am and 6pm Monday to Thursday.

33. Alcohol consumption in public areas such as beaches is not allowed.

34. The restrictions will be reviewed in January.
