South African Opposition political parties have widely welcomed the move by the Gauteng Provincial Government to introduce the Township Economic Development Law.

The law seeks to limit foreign ownership of businesses in certain sectors. The opposition parties have called for a similar law to be introduced at national level.

Julius Malema’s EFF Says The Law is Xenophobic

Small Business Development Minister, Nokuzola Capa, said a similar bill is going to be introduced at a national level and will be processed through a parliamentary process.

The DA, UDM, IFP and ATM have all welcomed the bill in Gauteng while the EFF has opposed the bill as Xenophobic.

The National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the bill is a trailblazing piece of legislation, that the rest of South Africa should adopt.
