South African politician and chairperson of the community safety portfolio, Mapiti Matsena (54), was stabbed to death in front of his family on Wednesday.

Speculation is that the stabbing was a hit linked to politics or his church.

According to police reports, Matsena  went to the toilet around 10pm, on wednesday night, when the intruder gained entry into the house through an unlocked glass door.

The intruder then covered his wife with a blanket, but she managed to escape and alert their son who lives in another house at the premises.

The son witnessed the fight between his father and the intruder and saw the suspect stabbing his father in the chest.

The suspect then escaped by jumping over the wall.

Police and paramedics declared Matsena dead at 10:52pm

Police Minister Bheki Cele told eNCA that a suspect has been picked up in connection with the stabbing.
