Mozambique has approached South Africa seeking military assistance.

President Fillipe Nyusi is reportedly seeking air and Naval support to cut off the insurgents ‘supplies from across Tanzania’ s Ruvhume River.

Mozambique is currently using private security companies to fight the insurgents in Cabo Delgado.

Nyusi, while speaking at the SADC Troika Summit Meeting in Harare last week, said terrorism can not be fought by Mozambique alone and needs to be a regional effort.

The identity of insurgents fighting in Mozambique is not clear and their leaders are unknown. The insurgency is now being considered as a regional threat as the group fighting in the region has been linked to ISIS.
