South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of more than 70 000 extra soldiers to enforce the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

The troops will join over 2000 already deployed for the period 2 April 2020 to 26 June 2020.

A letter emerged of him authorising the deployment of the entire South African Nation Defence Force (SANDF), including the auxiliary force and reserve force, for an additional 73,180 members of the SANDF to hit SA’s streets, adding to the 2,280 members already deployed.

The unprecedented move would come at a cost of more than R4.5 billion, around 10% of the SANDF budget.
